How Did Julius Caesar Die?
Julius Caesar, the Roman Empire’s “lifetime leader,” was assassinated by the senators on March 15, 44 BC, at a conference in the hall next to the Pompey Theater. The assassination conspiracy encompassed 60 nobles, including Caesar’s protégé, Marcus Brutus.
On March 18, Caesar was intending to leave Rome to fight in a war. In his absence, he also appointed faithful members of his army to manage the empire. The Senate, already irritated at having to accept Caesar’s directives, was enraged at the idea of taking orders from his subordinates. Cassius Longinus began conspiring against the dictator and immediately obtained the assistance of his brother-in-law, Marcus Brutus.
Caesar was certainly aware that many Senate members disliked him, but he dismissed the security forces shortly before his assassination. Before entering a meeting with the Senate that day, Caesar was supposed to have been sent a warning letter, which he did not read. When Caesar entered the great hall, he was surrounded by senators, all brandishing daggers. Servilius Casca struck first, stabbing Caesar in the neck. Other Senators joined in, repeatedly stabbing Caesar. Marcus Brutus was also reported to have stabbed Caesar.
Antony attempted to assume Caesar’s legacy after his assassination. Caesar, however, named Octavian, his adopted son, as the sole heir in his testament. Cassius and Brutus were able to recruit an army for the Republic, and Brutus even issued coins honoring the assassination, known as the Ides of March. Octavian vowed vengeance on those guilty of the assassination, and Cassius and Brutus committed themselves barely two years later, knowing that Octavian’s men had defeated them at the Battle of Philippa in Greece.
Antony took his troops to the East, where he befriended Cleopatra, Caesar’s former mistress. Octavian and Antony fought for years before Octavian won. Antony committed suicide in 30 BC. For many years, Octavian, later known as Augustus governed the Roman Empire.
